Now let’s move our investigation of these types of scales to closed positions (no open strings are used), starting in the key of A with A minor pentatonic and the A blues scale, illustrated in fifth position in the accompanying diagrams.

The best way to get this scale under your fingers is to “cycle” standard phrases that remain rooted in fifth position. In this first example, barre the index finger across the top two strings at the fifth fret and use either the ring or middle finger to bend the G string up one whole step. For the closing bent vibrato, be sure to keep the string bent up one whole step in proper intonation (in tune) and apply a slow, wide vibrato, using either the wrist—rocking it back and forth—or forearm—keeping the wrist stiff and rocking the forearm to create the sound of the vibrato.
